As we wrap up 2024, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the major political stories and legislative changes that have shaped South Carolina this year. From bold moves to tough debates, this year has been marked by significant decisions that will shape our state’s future for years to come.

At Alpha Strategies, we take pride in being part of South Carolina’s ongoing evolution. Whether it’s through partnerships, advocacy, or strategic planning, we remain steadfast in our commitment to collaborating with leaders and stakeholders to drive progress and create meaningful change for the betterment of all South Carolinians.

2024 Legislative Highlights:

1. Republican Supermajority in the State Senate

The November elections solidified a GOP supermajority in the South Carolina Senate, adding to their dominance in the State House. This shift empowers Republicans to push forward key legislative priorities, including tax reform and education policy changes.

2. Debates on School Voucher Programs

The state saw significant discussions about state-funded vouchers for private schools. While supporters emphasized increased family choice, critics warned of heightened educational inequality. Though the state Supreme Court rejected tuition grants this year, the debate is far from over and will likely reemerge with a new court in place.

3. Execution Resumes After 13 Years

In September, South Carolina carried out its first execution since 2011, reigniting a statewide conversation about the death penalty and its role in the criminal justice system.

4. Profiles in Courage Senators Lose Primaries

Three Republican senators—Katrina Shealy, Sandy Senn, and Penry Gustafson—lost their reelection primaries after opposing a total abortion ban. Their losses signal significant ideological shifts within the party.

5. Healthcare Access Expansion

Efforts to expand Medicaid and improve rural healthcare faced challenges but sparked important dialogue that could lead to action in the upcoming legislative session.

Looking Ahead to 2025:

1. Ongoing Debates

Expect continued discussions on Medicaid expansion, school voucher programs, and judicial selection reforms. These ongoing conversations will remain pivotal in shaping the state’s legislative priorities.

2. Energy Bill

A major energy bill is expected to dominate the 2025 session, addressing the state’s growing energy needs while balancing environmental concerns and population growth.

3. Tax Reform

With the Republican supermajority firmly in place, tax reform is a top priority. Proposals to reshape the tax code and support economic growth will undoubtedly influence South Carolina’s fiscal landscape.
